For October, we’re getting a little strange and unsettling with Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung.

Blending horror, fantasy, folklore and dark humour, Cursed Bunny is a collection of surreal short stories where the bizarre often reveals something very recognisable underneath: misogyny, capitalism, exploitation, loneliness, revenge and the strange ways power works in our everyday lives.

We’re reading it this month because it gives us plenty to talk about beyond the spooky season. What can horror and the grotesque say about gender and society that realism can’t? Why are bodies, particularly women’s bodies, such contested spaces? And when the world itself feels absurd, perhaps the most truthful stories are the strangest ones.
